====================================================================
Netscape needs quite a lot of memory to run. On a system with
little memory, Windows may use a swap file to temporarily copy
some information to disk. This can slow down your PC.
Check that Windows is using a permanent swap file. To do this,
run Control Panel from the Program Manager. Double click on the
386 Enhanced icon, then on the Virtual Memory button. If the swap
file type is shown as Temporary, click on the Change>> button. In
the New Settings section, select Permanent. Accept the
recommendation for the swap file size, then click on OK in each
of the Windows to finish. This should speed up the operation of
your PC.
If you are not able to set a Permanent swap file, or are still
unhappy with the performance of Netscape 2.0, you can try using
Netscape version 1.0 supplied in this directory.
PLEASE NOTE however that Netscape 1.0 does not support Netscape
Mail and Netscape News windows and the Email and News buttons
on the PIPEX Dial quick launch bar will not work.
To use Netscape 1.0, follow these instructions:
1. Go into DOS (not a DOS session under Windows)
2. Load the PIPEX Dial CD into drive D: (or equivalent)
3. Use the CD command to change to the PIPEX Dial installation
directory. For example, if you installed Dial in the
directory C:\DIAL you would enter CD C:\DIAL
4. Enter CD NETSCAPE
5. Enter RENAME NETSCAPE.EXE NETSCAPE.OLD
6. Enter COPY D:\DIAL\NET10\NETSCAPE.EXE NETSCAPE.EXE
7. Restart windows and run PIPEX Dial as normal. You'll now be using
Netscape 1.0 instead of Netscape 2.0
In common with all other large Windows applications, purchasing more
memory for your PC will enable Netscape 2.0 to run more smoothly.
